2–3 Night Private Charter from Anacortes through the San Juan Islands
Experience the wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest on this customizable 2- or 3-night private charter aboard Bear Paw. Departing from Anacortes, this journey blends scenic cruising, charming harbors, remote anchorages, kayaking, exceptional onboard dining, and — most memorably — dedicated time spent searching for whales in one of the most renowned marine ecosystems in North America.
The waters surrounding San Juan Island are known worldwide for orca activity, along with humpback whales, minke whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions, and bald eagles.
Two distinct types of orcas frequent this region:
-
Southern Resident orcas – fish-eating family pods most often seen in summer months.
-
Transient (Bigg’s) orcas – marine mammal hunters that travel more fluidly throughout the Salish Sea and may be encountered year-round.
Each cruising leg is intentionally routed through prime whale habitat whenever conditions allow, with your captain monitoring active corridors to maximize opportunities for sightings while always maintaining respectful, legal viewing distances.
Onboard Dining: Local, Fresh & Thoughtfully Prepared
All meals are prepared and served onboard by Bear Paw — no need to dine ashore unless guests choose to explore on their own.
Menus highlight the best of the Pacific Northwest, often featuring locally sourced seafood, seasonal produce, and regional farm-to-table ingredients. From fresh local catch to thoughtfully prepared breakfasts and relaxed evening meals enjoyed at anchor, dining aboard is comfortable, flavorful, and tailored to your group.
Dietary preferences and special requests can be accommodated in advance.
Day 1: Anacortes to Roche Harbor
Scenic Cruising & Whale Watch Opportunities
Depart Anacortes and cruise into island-rich waters, keeping watch immediately for marine life. Pass Speiden Island, where sea lions haul out along the rocky shoreline and eagles perch overhead.
Throughout the afternoon, time is intentionally set aside to search for whales in active travel corridors. Encounters, when they happen, are unforgettable — watching these powerful animals surface and travel in their natural environment.
Arrive in Roche Harbor with time to explore the marina, stroll shoreline paths, or relax onboard as sunset settles over the harbor.
Day 2: Roche Harbor to Friday Harbor
Island Exploration & On-the-Water Adventure
Cruise along the western side of San Juan Island — one of the region’s most consistent whale routes — before arriving in Friday Harbor. This stretch offers prime viewing opportunities, particularly during peak orca season.
In Friday Harbor, guests may enjoy optional shore-based experiences such as:
-
Visits to local wineries
-
Craft gin distillery tastings
-
Independent brewery stops
-
Scenic coastal and forested hiking trails
For a uniquely local marine experience, guests may also visit Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. to see a working oyster farm in action.
Back on the water, Bear Paw’s four Hobie kayaks can be launched for shoreline exploration — paddling quiet coves and protected inlets for a more intimate perspective of the islands.
Evening returns to a relaxed harbor atmosphere onboard.
Optional Day or Add a Day:
Sucia Islands
Remote Anchorage & Wilderness Cruising
Extend your charter with a third night at Sucia Island for a true off-the-grid experience. With no town infrastructure, Sucia offers protected anchorages, dramatic sandstone formations, forested hiking trails, and exceptional quiet.
The cruise north toward Sucia transits productive marine habitat and often provides additional opportunities to search for orcas, humpbacks, and other marine mammals.
This is an ideal setting to fully enjoy the Hobie kayaks — exploring hidden coves and striking shoreline cliffs accessible only by water.
Evenings here are especially peaceful, often accompanied by distant sea lion calls and expansive night skies.
Final Morning: Wildlife Passage & Return to Anacortes
Your return cruise once again prioritizes whale habitat corridors. The San Juan Islands remain one of the few places in the continental United States where encountering wild orcas in their natural environment is possible.
While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, every voyage is thoughtfully designed to provide the highest likelihood of respectful, memorable whale encounters.
Return to Anacortes by late morning for disembarkation — refreshed, restored, and deeply connected to the waters of the Pacific Northwest.
Not enough time?? No problem!! Every charter is customizable and we can add another night and include an another island if you wish!!
